Choosing A New Rod

Buying The Right Carp Rod

When you go to buy your new rod go prepared with a list of you requirements by answering the following questions and writing them down you will have a specification you can use when making your final purchase of your new Carp fishing rod. A new Carp rod means different things for different people, a child would perhaps need a basic rod where as a dedicated angler may want to invest in a rod that gives him an edge or a specific function.

1) Type of Carp fishing
What area of carp fishing are you interested in? You need to decide which of these are your specific interest.
margin fishing, stalking, distance casting, float fishing, method feeders or perhaps you just want a rod for spodding or as a float rod.

2) Rod length
Carp rods vary in total length from 11 feet to 13 feet and the all round size preferred is 12 feet. Most rods offered by retailers are 11 feet in length which is a general compromise, a Carp rods tend to come in two or three pieces making stowage easy. If you have a specific need for a shorter rod like scrambling in undergrowth or climbing up a tree the 10 foot length is preferred. Those needing to use distance fishing techniques or those that need a good rapid pickup when striking, the longer reach of the 12 foot rod is needed.

3) Rod strengths
The carp rods strength is rated by its test curve which is the amount of weight applied to the rod tip. Measuring the amount the rod bends until it reaches 90 degrees is called its test curve rating. An example would be if a rod bends to 90 degrees when a weight of 3 pounds (3lbs) is applied to the rods last ring, this rod would have a test curve of 3 pounds (3lbs). The bigger fish pulls harder on the rod causing the rod to bend to 90 degrees quicker so larger fish need a higher test curve rating.

4 ) Rod action
A carbon fibre Carp rods action is said to be fast and bends the whole rod to the 90 degree point rather than the all round composite rod said to have a tip action bending at just the tip. The carbon fibre rod is much lighter, thinner and very strong and in some cases Kevlar is added to the carbon fibre which makes the rod almost indestructible.

Choose your carp fishing rod carefully and it will last you a lifetime, as a guide to help you decide look carefully at the strength of the line you expect to use. For example a line strength of 15lbs would be well suited to a 3lb test curve rod. There are many makers of quality Carp fishing rods like Grays or Century
